Dr. Melissa Mercado joined Nirvana Healthcare Management Services (NHMS) in 2022 as a family medicine physician at the Roseville Medical Society (RMS) location. After earning her master’s degree in biomedical sciences (MS) at Rutgers University (Newark), Dr. Mercado received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (DO) from Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (Stratford, NJ) in 2018. She completed her residency in family medicine at CarePoint Health Christ Hospital (Jersey City) in the summer of 2021. She is a native Spanish speaker.
Dr. Mercado is Board-Certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ABOFP) and the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME). Professional affiliations include memberships in the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP); the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP); and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
Dr. Mercado is certified to treat both pediatric and adult patients. She also conducts and evaluates preventative health examinations for women. She is passionate about patient education relating to various acute and chronic conditions. Whenever it is deemed appropriate, she implements osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Through continual and candid communications with her patients, she has established meaningful, long-term relationships with them.
When asked to “describe your Nirvana experience,” the first word that comes to mind is “family.” Dr. Mercado feels that all staff members benefit from the collaborative spirit that is evident among individuals and departments. Regarding a particularly meaningful experience at Nirvana, Dr. Mercado recalls a patient who recently came to her with diabetes, which had remained uncontrolled for several years. After educating her patient about its causes, long-term effects, and the measures that can effectively control this chronic disease, her patient is now successfully managing her condition. “This outcome exemplifies the effectiveness of patient education and ongoing communications between the physician and her patient.”
Dr. James Friedlander joined Nirvana Healthcare Management Services (NHMS) in 2021. He sees patients at 613 Park Avenue, East Orange, NJ location. In addition to his medical degree, he has an MS in Human Nutrition, holds certifications in ACLS/BLS, and is a certified teacher of Kripalu yoga. Dr. Friedlander is a member of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM: 2021) and the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO: 2018).
As a primary care physician, Dr. Friedlander diagnoses and treats patients presenting with acute and chronic conditions, sees patients for wellness visits, and whenever necessary, coordinates care with specialists. He also secures the services of home healthcare, initiates procedures for placement in skilled nursing facilities, and facilitates end-of-life discussions with patients and their caretakers.
Dr. Friedlander describes his NHMS experience in one word: “copacetic”—“very good.” He enjoys working with other staff members and describes the Nirvana community as embodying collegial respect and total commitment to patient care.
Dr. Friedlander recalls a particularly gratifying experience: He was treating a patient with severe leg pain. A previous non-Nirvana physician had told the patient that her pain was caused by sciatica. However, Dr. Friedlander’s examination indicated that her condition was piriformis syndrome. After a brief course of osteopathic manipulation and simple stretching exercises, the patient was pain-free—without taking any medication. Summing up the results of his accurate diagnosis: “She called the office to tell me that I had helped her more than the half-dozen other doctors that had merely prescribed pain killers.”

After years of practice in Manhattan, Dr. Chung has come to the conclusion that there are a few healthcare styles that may keep you healthy or make your life easier.
Routine - Although screening cannot prevent all diseases, regular visits with a doctor you know and who knows you, is the best way to prevent diseases caused by lifestyle. Smoking, weight, lack of exercise, and lipids are basic issues addressed regularly at a Family Doctor’s office.
Network - Your connection to the healthcare system starts with your Family Doctor. Specialist referrals, labs, treatment can be obtained much more easily if you deal with a professional who sees many people with the same types of problems every day.
Comfort - It is much easier to get to the bottom of a problem with someone you know. Each time you meet a new provider it takes a while to break through the initial uncertainty.
Doctors, too, need time to know your personality in order to interpret your current symptoms. By establishing a relationship over time, problems are much simpler to address.
