Patrick McCulloch, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained, CAQ-certified orthopedic sports medicine surgeon who holds the John S. Dunn Endowed Chair in Orthopedic Surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital. He is a long-time team physician and consultant for the Houston Astros and the President of the Major League Baseball (MLB) Team Physicians Association (2020-2021). Dr. McCulloch is also the head team physician for Rice University. Additionally, he works with the Houston Ballet and the NASA Astronaut Corps.
Dr. McCulloch graduated with honors from Harvard University, where he was a varsity athlete. He graduated at the top of his class from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and was president of the student body. Dr. McCulloch returned to Harvard to complete an internship at Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital and a residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Surgery Program.
Dr. McCulloch completed a fellowship in sports medicine at Rush Medical Center in Chicago. He subsequently completed the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) European Traveling Fellowship. Dr. McCulloch served as faculty at Baylor College of Medicine for three years before joining the Houston Methodist Hospital staff. At Houston Methodist, he holds academic appointments from Houston Methodist Academic Institute, Weill Cornell Medical College, Texas A&M, and is the Associate Fellowship Director.
At his practice, Dr. McCulloch performs arthroscopic shoulder, elbow, and knee procedures. These procedures include ligament and tendon repairs, reconstructions, and fracture surgery. He also treats labrum and meniscus tears, and articular cartilage injuries, including the use of cell therapies and cartilage transplants. Dr. McCulloch has extensive experience working with patients who have degenerative shoulder conditions. He provides rotator cuff repairs and shoulder replacements for those dealing with chronic shoulder problems.
Dr. McCulloch is active in teaching and research. He has over 100 publications in the medical literature of his field. He teaches fellows and residents and is a founding editor of Orthobullets.com, which is an international orthopedic education website.
