Edgar Celis, MD, is a double board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management physician, and the founder of the California Pain Group, located in San Rafael and Daly City, California. Dr. Celis has extensive experience in improving patient lives by using conservative, state-of-the-art techniques to treat a wide range of joint and spine disorders.
Dr. Celis completed a surgical internship at Mount Sinai Beth Israel hospital in New York City. He successfully received specializations in both pain management and anesthesiology from Harvard University Medical School, having completed his residency and fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Before founding California Pain Group, Dr. Celis worked in private practice and with leading academic hospitals in Boston, New York City, and Miami. He has a particular interest and valuable experience in comprehensive pain management and advanced minimally invasive techniques, including ultrasound-guided nerve injections and spinal cord stimulation.
A native of Colombia, Dr. Celis speaks Spanish fluently. During his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children, and playing soccer, hiking, and mountain biking.
Dr. Daniel Nelson, helps patients find relief from chronic pain at his practice in Kirkland, Washington.
Dr. Nelson grew up in the Puget Sound area and was an honors and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Washington. He went to medical school at the University of Southern California and completed his internship and residency in anesthesiology at USC-L.A. County Hospital Medical Center where he was elected chief resident. After residency, Dr. Nelson completed fellowship training in interventional pain medicine. He then started the Pain Management program at Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, California.
After returning to the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Nelson joined the Evergreen Hospital medical staff and founded the Pain Medicine department there, as well as establishing one of the first full-spectrum independent pain medicine clinics in the area. He is a founding member and Director-at-Large of the Washington Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. Dr. Nelson is a guest lecturer at the University of Washington pain medicine fellowship program and has been actively involved in the teaching of pain fellows, medical students, and physician assistants.
He has also served as a consultant and speaker to a variety of organizations. In his off time, Dr. Nelson enjoys hiking, biking, golfing, skiing and mountain climbing. Tarek H. Shahbandar, MD, is a devoted and seasoned physician who brings the necessary warm-hearted diligence, time, and respect to the practice of interventional pain medicine. Dr. Shahbandar was born in Michigan and raised in Wisconsin. He attended the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee before completing a residency and fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. At the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, Dr. Shahbandar had the privilege to train under some of the world’s most prestigious pioneers in pain medicine. He also spent three years training physicians at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Recognized for his authentic and kind bedside manner and exceptional procedural skills, Dr. Shahbandar always focuses on alleviating pain while minimizing the use of controlled substances and pain medicines. Irfan Lalani, MD, PA, is board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and board certified in pain medicine by both the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is currently in private practice in Sugar Land, Texas.
Dr. Lalani graduated as a valedictorian from the Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. He then completed his residency in neurology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
During this time, Dr. Lalani served as chief resident and had the distinct honor of placing first in a nationwide examination of neurologists in training. The Texas Neurological Society also conferred the prestigious Young Investigator Award for his innovative research efforts.
Dr. Lalani subsequently completed a fellowship in anesthesia and pain medicine at the University of Texas (UT) MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. After his fellowship, he joined the UT MD Anderson’s Department of Anesthesiology as an assistant professor in pain medicine. He has published numerous textbook chapters and papers in peer-reviewed journals addressing contemporary issues in pain management and neurology.
His unique background in neurology gives him an in-depth understanding of the structure and function of the nervous system. He uses these skills to perform detailed patient evaluations and formulate comprehensive diagnostic and treatment plans.
Dr. Lalani also has extensive experience in performing and teaching a variety of interventional pain treatments, including nerve blocks, botulinum toxin injections, epidural steroid injections, radiofrequency neurotomy, implantable nerve and spinal cord stimulators, as well as intrathecal pumps. Michael Esposito, MD, founded the Interventional Spine & Pain Institute – located in Vero Beach and Palm Bay, Florida – in order to create a multidisciplinary, patient-centric practice to treat a wide range of acute and chronic pain syndromes.
