Understanding the Deeper Challenges of Pelvic Health
Despite significant advancements in medical science over the past few decades, pelvic health and related disciplines remain largely underserved. Many underlying pathologies affecting pelvic health continue to be poorly understood, resulting in a detrimental impact on individuals' quality of life.
Numerous patients experience pelvic pain and pelvic floor dysfunction, yet the precise causes often elude medical professionals. This leads to frustration as patients consult multiple specialists in hopes of finding answers, often to no avail. The pelvic region houses several vital organs that play crucial roles in overall well-being, including the urinary, reproductive, and lower gastrointestinal systems — all of which may be simultaneously affected.
The autonomic nervous system plays a central role in regulating pelvic organ functions such as urination, defecation, and sexual activity. Inflammation or dysfunction in this complex neural network — particularly around the sacral region — often contributes to symptoms that are difficult to diagnose or treat effectively.
The complex anatomy and neurophysiology of the pelvic region have posed longstanding challenges for the medical community. Dr. Khashayar Shakiba, a double board-certified gynecologist and urogynecologist, has spent over 25 years working with patients suffering from misunderstood pelvic conditions. Furthermore, when she did look at my history, she didn’t bother to actually read it or she would’ve been the breast cancer history in my family and that I don’t have a thyroid. When I asked her to slow down during the exam, she did not and told me she was in a rush because they were understaffed. During the breast exam, same thing. She then asked me if I wanted to continue the exam because I looked uncomfortable and annoyed in which I said I am because I feel like you are rushing even though I asked you twice to slow down. She then said she would get the office manager and my exam was not complete. I will not be back and I will not be recommending this place to anyone else. This nurse should not have a job and should not be able to exam patients ever again. She should not be “teaching” other student doctors either because the way she handled this situation was ethically and morally wrong in every way.”
Huiying Hou, MD, has been practicing as an OB/GYN at Jersey Women’s Care Center in Fair Lawn and Jersey City, New Jersey, since 2015. Nicola Pemberton, MD, FACOG, is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist and the medical director of The Birth Center of New Jersey in West Union, New Jersey. A recognized leader in women’s health, Dr. Pemberton is passionate about helping women experience safe, empowering, and minimally invasive births.
Featured in The New York Times and a Netflix documentary about childbirth, Dr. Pemberton is celebrated for her compassionate approach and tireless service—especially during the pandemic, when she safely delivered hundreds of babies and became a local hero to many.
Dr. Pemberton earned her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Miami and her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada. She completed her clinical rotations in England and her OB/GYN residency at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, where she was recognized for her teaching excellence. She later served as a faculty member at Maimonides Medical Center and as a clinical assistant professor at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University.
In addition to childbirth, Dr. Pemberton offers advanced gynecologic care, including laparoscopic and robotic procedures, as well as a range of in-office treatments. She lives in Union County with her husband and three children.
